Young Don
Pride of the Projects Vol.1: God Amongst Men
Since about 2007, Young Don has been one of my favorite rappers from Dallas and has yet to disappoint. In April of 2011, Young Don finally releases his much anticipated mixtape, Pride of the Projects Vol. 1: God Amongst Men.
Being that I am a Dallas Zu affiliate, I had the privilege of hearing much of the material featured on the disc months before it became available to the public. With his solo mixtape, Don a.k.a. DC Sniper, was able to solidify his position as one of the most lyrically agile rappers in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. Pride of the Projects finds Young Don offering up his adaption of songs once recorded by Rakim, Wu-Tang, Waka Flocka Flame and 50 Cent (in many cases better than the original compositions). Between songs, Don gets a little help from some very entertaining interludes, as well as features from Dallas Zu members Demented Da Ogre, Big Suave, CJ Seban, Pharaoh Da Don and more. Young Don wastes no time going in with "ET", where Don spits over a spine chilling beat with a verse colder than a Chicago winter. Then, Don attacks the Rakim track "Holy Are You", spitting bars impressive enough to make the God MC sit up in his seat and take notice. Another stellar performance occurs when Don smashes over 50 Cent's "Stretch". On "Stretch", Young Don analyzes the current rap scene finding amazing parallels between the industry and the high school scene. Don's partner in rhyme, Big Suave makes an astonishing lyrical appearance on "No Hands". While Don displays that lyrical agility alluded to earlier, Suave delivers some of the hardest hitting punch lines in 2011. Also, on "All Seeing Eye", riding along side Big Suave, CJ Seban and Sid Black, Don puts those trend followers who fall short of rising above the influence to shame. Other stand-out tracks on the mixtape include "C.R.E.A.M.", "Feelin' it", "Million Miles". Overall, Young Don delivers an exceptional project. As a matter of fact, if Pride of the Projects is any indication of what is to come, the rest of the competition in the rap game might want to find a doorway to stand in, because Don is about to shake up the rap world.
