These days, it seems that everyone wants to be a star, but few have the talent, desire or work ethic to make it happen. As The Urban Advocate, it's my job to separate the marathon runners from the treadmill runners. It doesn't surprise me when I have to navigate my way through the rough to find a glimmer of hope for the next generation; but those unplanned, chance encounters are the ones that get me every time. Like, one night when I met up with a few partners of mine (on some completely unrelated business), I definitely didn't expect the smallest person and the softest voice in the room to have an echo effect in my memory. Although I might be generous by saying she is 5 feet in stature, there is no mistaking that Sequoia Houston stands taller than so many others in her field.
Sequoia Houston was born in San Fransisco, CA. Due to her being in a military family, she spent her earlier years living in California, Ohio and Texas, where they eventually settled in. At an early age, it seemed as if Sequoia was poised to be in front of an audience; she became involved in everything from playing the clarinet and training on the piano to being apart of the Dallas All-City Honor Choir while attending W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy in Dallas. After graduating, Sequoia attended the University of Houston where she studied both psychology media production. While in college, she made appearances in a few student productions including Thirteen and The Brandanson Fire Department. Needless to say, Sequoia had found her passion and decided to pursue a career in the entertainment field.
Now, at 27 years of age, Sequoia Houston has developed quite an impressive resume appearing in at least a couple dozen plays, short and independent films. While so many others sit around waiting for opportunities to come their way, Sequoia decided that she would get her break, even if it meant that she had to make her on way. In 2011, she released a short film entitled, What Things May Come, which Sequoia wrote and directed in it's entirety. In August of 2011, "What Things May Come" debuted at the Dallas Black Film Festival and was awarded 3rd place. But, as I stated earlier, few possess the work ethic to make it in this industry. Sequoia obviously is one of the few. The young dynamic sister has been staying busy taking on a number of new film projects including, Legend of Love, Internet Blind Date and Roses For Tomorrow. I heard people say consistency is the key to all success, and if there is any truth to that, Sequoia's future is as good as secure.
Sequoia Houston was destined for a life in the entertainment business. From the time she was born, the cameras and bright lights have been surrounding her documenting her growth. But, each time the spotlight shines in her direction, she has steps up to the plate and performs without second guessing herself or her abilities. This multi-talented young star is only in the beginning of her career. What things may come? Only time will tell for sure; but what ever it is, I plan on having a front row seat.
