When I first saw the news that DC Comics would be introducing a new character to their growing list of superheroes, I must admit I was a little confused. Not so much because the new character would be a young Black girl named Naomi, but because this young Black girl was from Oregon. But after reading up on Naomi, I got excited.
For the 9th year, MBK Dallas teamed up with Emerald City Bar & Grill, Radio One and Street Speaker Media to feed homeless and low-income residents in the South Dallas area.
In a city that's known for it's championship professional sports teams and growing economy, it's surprising that Dallas has the highest child poverty rate in the country among cities with more than 1 million people. Approximately, 3,000 kids our city are currently effected by homelessness. So, this autumn The Urban Advocate is launching a new initiative to help provide basic essential items to children effected by homelessness in the Dallas area.
Recently, a new channel by the name of FAWOC launched across ROKU streaming platforms. FAWOC (For All Women of Color) is a dynamic platform that broadcasts content created by, starring or impacting all women of color.
When The Urban Advocate started back in 2008, we were fed up with the negative music and images being pumped through the mainstream media about urban culture. We wanted to give a platform to artists who were being ignored by mainstream media outlets, especially those who had a positive message. One of the artists we took notice to early on was Slingshot David, better known as Dee-1.
