When The Urban Advocate started back in 2008, we were fed up with the negative music and images being pumped through the mainstream media about urban culture. We wanted to give a platform to artists who were being ignored by mainstream media outlets, especially those who had a positive message. One of the artists we took notice to early on was Slingshot David, better known as Dee-1.
Dee-1 has come a long way since we first featured his video "Jay, 50 and Weezy". As a matter of fact, he has come so far that even mainstream media outlets have started taking notice to the New Orleans-bred emcee. It seems like yesterday when we first got a chance to chop it up with Dee-1 at the Texas Summer Music Conference outside of Heroes back in 2011.
A lot has changed in the world since 2011. One thing that has not changed, is Dee-1. When I pulled up on Dee-1 at the House of Blues the other night, he was still as humble and gracious as he was the day I met him. He has been able to remain the same despite all of the success and despite of the set-backs he's endured throughout his career. For that reason, we salute Dee-1.
If you're looking for rap that feeds the soul, make sure you go check out his album Slingshot David, available digitally anywhere music is sold and streamed. Also check him out live when he comes to your town. I guarantee, you won't regret the experience.
