Deja Vu all over again! It seems that every time a police officers kills a Black male, the media diverts people's attention away from the real issue at hand. Over the past week, the big story in Baltimore hasn't been the brutal killing of Freddy Gray at the hands of the Baltimore Police Department...nope! The focus has been the riot that broke out on Monday. Though there were two days of peaceful protest prior to Monday that got little to no media coverage and there hasn't been any violent protest since, Monday seems to be the only thing the media, and people on social media, want to talk about. News outlets looking for ratings, attention starved people on social media looking for likes and retweets...that to me is more sickening than the riots themselves. Well I feel it is our responsibility as The Urban Advocate to be the voice of the people and show you what mainstream media won't show.
Let's start with this video put together by the good folks at AJ+, showing clips captured during this week long protest in the City of Baltimore.
So while everyone else would rather talk about the riots and the mother who beat her son in the middle of the streets for taking part in it, I would much rather focus the attention on the actual investigation into the murder of Freddie Gray. I would much rather focus the attention on the fact the rival gangs in the city were able to call a truce and join forces with religious groups and other community leaders to PEACEFULLY protest. I would much rather shed light on the fact that there were so many protesters not only trying to protect the city from being destroyed by the small group of people who were in the streets to cause damage, but that were also trying to protect the police from being attacked. Of course, these are stories you can't sensationalize...but, oh well!
